Scholarships

        The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. provides several scholarships each year to deserving North Carolina college students with majors in horticulture, landscape design, botany and other related fields.  Funding for these scholarships comes from club donations and the sale of our annual Engagement Calendars.  Scholarship winners are determined by the Scholarship Committee of GCNC.  The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. is proud of its long history of supporting the education of  young people. Application packets are available from Regina Coscarelli, the GCNC State Scholarship Chairman, or from college or university financial aid officers.  Additionally the needed application forms can be downloaded from this website (see Forms Page).
        Additionally, there are 32 annual scholarships offered by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Scholarship Program (Look under the "about us" pull down menu).  North Carolina  recipients of these NGC scholarships must be legal residents of  North Carolina, be studying in the same fields as above, maintain a 3.0 grade point average or better, and have a financial need.  North Carolina residents who receive national scholarships may be enrolled in colleges or universities in other states.
     Also, the South Atlantic Region (Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia) annually offers scholarships, including the Corrie Whitlock Memorial SAR Scholarship.  Applicants must be majoring in a Horticulture- related field and must be a resident of one of the 5 states listed above.  Contact the State Scholarship Chairman of your home state for further information and application forms.  North Carolina residents, CLICK HERE to email the North Carolina Scholarship Chairman. The deadline for Scholarship Applications to reach the Regional Chairman is February 15.

Guidelines For Applicants

1. Applicants must apply through the Board of Governors Scholarships, The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc.  To obtain additional scholarship information and application forms contact Regina Coscareli, the GCNC State Scholarship Chairman, or application forms may be downloaded from this website (see Forms Page).

2. Applicants must be a United States Citizen and meet state requirements as a North Carolina resident.

3. Applicants must be a full time student and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

4. Scholarships are available to college juniors, seniors and graduate students.  Applications may be made by sophomores for the junior year.

5. Scholarships will be given to be used at state universities in North Carolina with majors in Botany, Environmental Studies, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Recreation Resources Administration or related fields.

6. If a student changes to a major outside the above group listed or drops out during the school year, the balance of the money must be returned to The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., PO Box 33520, Raleigh, North Carolina 27636-3520.

7. As long as the high academic standing is maintained and the need is still apparent, the student recipient may apply for a renewable scholarship the following year.  Preference will be given to former recipients.

8. Scholarship grants are for the full school year and are sent  to the school's Financial Aid Officer by The Garden Club of North Carolina Headquarters.

Documentation

The following is to be included with the application:

1. Transcript of academic record through the latest grading period, including overall average, i.e. 3.0

2. A recent passport size photo with name, address and birth date on back.

3. A handwritten letter from the applicant stating the need for a scholarship and what the vocational goals are.

4. Reference letters as listed on the application must be mailed directly to The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., P O Box 33520, Raleigh, NC 27636-3520 to be received by March 1.  The applicant must provide to each person writing a reference letter an addressed, stamped business size envelope with the applicant's name on the lower left corner.  The reference letter for financial responsibility should be from a creditor or financial institution.
